Since I'm all alone here now and have no friends in this community who care about me anymore, I have taken the first real step towards switching to blogspot. My first post may be found here.
I hope you're all happy. |

Bad news: I have now failed two California road tests. I am now batting .500 lifetime against road tests. Before my third try, I think I'm gonna put in some extra time with the hitting coach and try and concentrate on fundamentals, get back to basics, work on my mechanics.
Good news: I used to daydream about the day when I got my first car, and I always had this feeling it would be one of those old-ass Corolla hatchbacks. I don't know why, I just liked the look of 'em. Well, it isn't a hatchback, and it isn't old-ass, but as of yesterday I am the proud owner of a 1999 Toyota Corolla CE. After two months of deliberating and feeling guilty, I went through with it and bought a used car. I'm pretty happy with it, and I damn well better be, considering all the time I had to sink into the process of buying it this week.
Already the benefits are apparent. Yesterday night on our way back, my friend Vince and I went shopping at various electronics stores, and today I did grocery shopping without the aid of delivery or someone else's car. But the best part is that I finally got an In-N-Out burger, and yes, those are good burgers, Walter. As I sunk my teeth into that perfect, fresh bun, through the layer of exquisitely grilled onions, wiped the special sauce off my mouth, tore through an order of well-done french fries, and wondered what exactly John 3:16 says, I felt almost like Harold and Kumar at White Castle.
One of these days I'll get some webspace and I'll post some pictures of my car, as well as of that convertible I got upgraded to a couple of weeks ago. Oh, speaking of webspace, my name is now up on the Berkeley stats website.Current Music: The Pixies - Doolittle

Okay, so a lot has happened lately that has been pretty cool (going home for the weekend, curling, all that stuff, it was all great) but today something happened that I feel I must share with you all.
I rented a Dodge Neon for the weekend, so I could drive around and do my road test on Monday. But they ran out at the rental place, so I ended up with a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder instead, at no extra charge! Can you believe it? A CONVERTIBLE, man! I'll try and take some pictures before I have to return it. Man. So cool.
I was also struck by how nice it is to have a car in Berkeley. Tonight I was really able to just go anywhere, without worrying about getting home. And I have to fight the urge to go drive it around now.Current Music: Hawksley Workman - lover/fighter

I'm feeling pretty bad about leaving this blog all un-posted-in for so long. But then again, I knew it would happen. Again, I'm sure you all understand.
You all know this already, but the best news since my last entry is that Mike got into SFU. That's good. My parents traded in the old Focus on a PT Cruiser. Depending on who you ask, that's good or bad. I didn't inherit the old Focus; that's bad.
Business as usual here; classes seem to be going okay, even if I don't know a lick about statistics. But I'm (hopefully) picking it up as I go along.
Besides that the most notable thing that's been going on with me is my relapse into TetriNET addiction. I think I've kicked the habit about 4 times in my life already, and now we're into a 5th. I don't think I've gone a day without TetriNET for, uh, probably weeks now, and I think I've actually played against everyone who reads this blog. (Except Adam, and that's only a matter of time.) So that's what I've been doing instead of blogging.
I've also noticed that TetriNET addiction is viral. Already, probably 80% of the people I've (re-)introduced the game to directly can't get enough.
Oh, and yesterday I got my very own DSL connection. Gone are the days of sharing a weak wireless signal with my landlord; nope, now yours truly has his very own DSL modem, and both computers hooked up to the internet finally. (And a borrowed router. Thanks, David.) You know what this means... FULL TIME TETRINET SERVER!!! w00t
I'd try to think of some more witty stuff to put on here, but quite frankly, I can't be bothered. Okay bye.Current Music: Wilco - I Got You

So okay, it's been a long time since I last made an entry. But I'm sure you understand.
Things are going okay here so far. Besides the expected combination of nerves, second-guessing, and fear, in general things have gone quite smoothly (with TONNES AND TONNES UPON TONNES of help from my fabulous landlord). I do feel irreversibly grown up now, though; just a warning to you all that buying a microwave will do that to you. My apartment is kinda far from campus, but I'm seriously considering buying a car. Since I've already bought a toaster oven and rice cooker, I figure, why not go the whole hog and take that last, big step into early adulthood. Step 1: convince myself I'm not just a spoiled brat who wants a car. Step 2: get a license. Step 2a: find a car. Step 3: profit.
Since I'm looking mostly at mid-90s Hondas and Toyotas, if/when I actually do get the car, I need volunteers to help me rice it out. So far the plan consists of: a spoiler; stripes; painting "R-series" on the side, along with "Powered by [some Japanese words I don't understand]"; and a big oversized rearview, like Galen has. I thought about getting those horrible blue under-lights, but I decided that was just too much. Then I can dye my hair blond and drive around blaring the DDR soundtrack or something. And you can all take pictures. Suggestions? Volunteers?
Yesterday the new grad students had our photos taken for the department bulletin board. I made sure to wear my Homsar shirt; I figured that was the image I wanted to represent me for my whole time here. Sadly, I don't think much of Homsar got in the picture, but at least I'm wearing an electric blue shirt. That's pretty good already.
Of course I miss everyone already, but actually I think I've probably talked to just about everyone who reads this blog online by now anyways. Ah, the miracles of the internet.Current Music: Crowded House - Fall At Your Feet

| » What's Wang This Week |
I haven't blogged in a week now. To get me back into the swing of things, here are a list of things for which I am appreciative, right at this instant:
1) Chopsticks, with which I am able to eat peanuts and corn chips while still keeping my fingers - and ergo, my keyboard - clean 2) Derek, for introducing me to the glory that is eating chips with chopsticks 3) A blog site that doesn't crash my browser catastrophically every single time I use it 4) Corn chips 5) The smooth sonic stylings of Blue Rodeo and Jim Cuddy's golden voice. Sing it, Jimothy 6) The ability to have threaded comments on livejournal.com 7) The White Castle burger patties available in San Francisco grocery stores, and my pending ability to make my own Slyders 8) Diet 7-Up, which I think I can drink right now without getting a weird sugar high before bed 9) Neodymium magnets
( 10) The ability to do this )

I'm seriously considering defecting to blogspot. You know, I'd always had the impression that livejournal had more of a true blogging community, but EVERYONE I know who has started a blog after I did has gone to blogspot (or Xanga, but I don't feel quite right there. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the azn-ness (yes, I said "azn")). However, since I'll be going to Berkeley, I figure I'll be meeting some more 1337-folks, and they might be more likely to have livejournal accounts. I'll give it a few weeks anyways before I jump ship. At the very least, I might just start an account on blogspot while dickolas_wang is still available.
I'm also feeling pretty inadequate. In terms of wittiness/coolness/general subversiveness, my blog is lagging badly behind my peers'. I think I need to start being more interesting.

| » Bullets! My only weakness. How did you know? |
It's been a great weekend, but one which has left me needing some rest. To that effect, today I didn't leave the house. In fact, I think I've spent more time sitting in front of this computer today than I did sleeping last night; I'm okay with that if you are.
( So tell me, Richard, what did you do this weekend? )

Derek's visiting, and my routine has been shot to bits in general. Instead of waking up at 11:30-12:30 to be taken to lunch with my parents, I've been getting woken up by Jowen and Derek so that I can drive them to lunch and listen to complaints from both of them about Kelloggs All-Bran (although their complaints are of different natures). It's pretty fun having Derek around, and hanging out, the four of us, again. So if you're reading, Victor, Derek, and Jowen, it's great to see you guys again all in one place. I love you guys. Now let us never speak of this again.
Let's see... what else? Last night we went to the Richmond Night Market with my homies from the Math Club. It was about what I expected, and I got an awesome, awesome keepsake for my first visit to the night market. I won't say what it is here as I don't want to ruin the moment of recognition when you first see me with it, but the subject is a little hint. Plus I got squid on a stick.
Also, the Graham-Vikram Ass Improvement Contest 2004 has been renamed to just the Ass Improvement Contest 2004, and the timeline has been extended. The time's a comin' to preliminary judging. Shoot, I forgot to buy baby oil.
